The Grounds of Alexandria

J & I recently went on a small holiday to Sydney. I’ve always loved Sydney, having spent a lot of time there as a child (due to it being where my Dad lived and worked for a long time.) It always gives me such a nostalgic and happy vibe, and it’s definitely one of my favourite places: especially because it now reminds me of my Dad, who passed away when I was young.

I was also ecstatic for this trip because it was the first one that J & I had ever taken together! Of course, being in a long distance relationship, we have both traveled to see each other (J to Australia, myself to Canada) but it was a lot more fun traveling with the two of us.

Our AirBNB was located in Erskineville – and it was the loveliest place! Sometimes AirBNB’s can be a hit or miss, but we were in love the second we walked through the door… we didn’t want to leave our cosy borrowed home. The best part was that it was just a 20 minute walk (or a 5 minute Uber!) from The Grounds of Alexandria, which is easily one of my new favourite places.

In fact, since returning to Melbourne I’ve been frantically hunting for a place as charming as The Grounds of Alexandria, much to no avail. Looks like I’ll have to start planning another visit – what a shame.

The Grounds

The Grounds has several different areas spread out over approximately an acre of land. There are several different food & drink options (including The Roastery where I had the best chai latte of all time!), The Grounds Garden (absolutely beautiful), and a florist which, of course, I couldn’t leave without an armful of lovely bunches of flowers!

In case you want to bring your kids (or you’re just a huge animal lover like me!) The Grounds of Alexandria also features a petting zoo (!) that is home to a couple of cute farm animals (!!) including a gorgeous, lovely fat pig named Kevin Bacon (!!!)

The Cafe

With so many different areas to explore, the time absolutely flies at The Grounds of Alexandria. Before we knew it, it was lunchtime, so we decided to grab a bite. Out of all the places available, we decided to head to The Cafe, as it was still serving breakfast & brunch options which was what we fancied. The Cafe is located indoors, with a huge abundance of cakes, muffins, and freshly baked bread in the glass windows. There was quite a long line & wait, but it’s understandable for such an instagram-worthy kind of place: and the food made it so worth it.

As an avocadoholic, I of course chose the Smashed Avocado toast, which came with feta, tomato, dried chilli flakes & fresh mint from their garden. Now, you’d think this could only be as good as avocado generally is, right? Wrong. Somehow, The Grounds made avocado taste even more delicious than usual, and this was the best smashed avo’ I’d ever had. Don’t even get me started on J’s choice: the Hash & Eggs, which was cured speck & gruyere hash with wilted spinach & poached eggs. To be honest, the description didn’t mean much to me (what is cured speck?) but when we shared our meals with eachother, I almost regetted choosing the smashed avocado – and that’s saying something. The hash was basically fried potato (duh) but the potato was so fluffy and delicious. I’m definitely going to try and recreate both of these meals at home, let me know if you’d like the recipes!

The Market

We ended up visiting The Grounds a couple of times during our visit. The first time we decided to go on a Monday, so most people would be at school or work, and we would have a little more space and time to explore. However, upon further research we discovered that a market was held every Saturday & Sunday, and we had to go. We ended up going on the last Saturday of our visit (our flight was early Sunday morning) and it was such a perfect end to our trip.

The market was incredible: everything is homemade, and you could tell every single stall owner put so much effort into their products. Unfortunately I couldn’t buy much, as my suitcases were already dangerously close to the weight limit. But I did pick up a gorgeous strawberry-lemonade scented candle in a milkshake glass, and it smells absolutely incredible.

All in all, J & I had the most fabulous time exploring The Grounds of Alexandria, and I can’t recommend it enough – especially if you love fresh flowers, fresh food, animals, and homemade goods! Make sure to check out their website here.

What’s one of your favourite places you’ve discovered and loved? I know I’ve said it throughout this post, but this is definitely mine. I’m now left feeling sad and homesick for it – eek! Please let me know in the comments, or tag me on your pics on instagram @hellomoonies or twitter @hellomoonies so I can see!

This city looks so beautiful! I haven’t ever heard of it before but now I have to put it on my list of places to see. I’m an avocadoaholic as well and what you ordered in the cafe looked so delicious!
