A SMALL SPRING SOIRÈE
IT FINALLY FEELS LIKE SPRING
Spring is upon us! Well, technically it’s been here for nearly two months. But, it’s been absolutely miserable weather up until a week or two ago, and never really felt like Spring. Now that it does, I decided to throw a small spring soirée to celebrate.
I’m definitely somebody who adores being a hostess. From deciding on what kind of party/gathering, to spending hours on pinterest for inspiration, to creating playlists to fit the theme, the list goes on. I could do it all day every day & never get bored. I once spent months planning a casual BBQ that I was having. Months! I’m not even exaggerating. (And, by the way, it was a damn good BBQ, if I do say so myself.)
However, as much as I love planning, I also love spontaneity. So, when I woke up this morning and the sun was out & shining, I knew it was the perfect day to gather up some friends and enjoy it with music, drinks and a couple of tasty recipes. I sent out a quick group text, threw on clothes that weren’t pyjamas, and headed down to my local supermarket to grab ingredients and a couple of other bits & pieces.
Because I wanted to make a couple of different things in a minimal amount of time, I decided to go for quick, simple recipes that would still be tasty & visually pleasing – I’m all about party aesthetics!
If something told me to picture Spring food, my thoughts usually goes straight to salad & sandwiches. With this in mind, I made sure to have a variety of both – including my all time favourite, egg salad sandwiches. Yum. I also wanted the spread to have variety – so I made up some bruschetta chicken burgers and served them cold, which were a definite hit!
I cut up some french stick to serve with a couple of dips – I don’t think there’s a soul in the world who doesn’t like dip! I chose beetroot and baba ganoush, which is one of my favourites. I also made a couple of plates of my chicken bites, which taste very similar to KFC popcorn chicken but bigger (and less greasy), served with sweet chilli sauce.
One of the most raved about dishes of the day was the mojito watermelon slices. Watermelon alone is already amazing, but add the mojito flavours and you get a winner. I think everybody was a little hesitant because of the sea salt, but once they tried it they were pleasantly surprised!
I obviously had to make at least one dessert, so I made one of my favourite vanilla cream & jam cakes, and topped it with these cute little edible flower decorations!
I kept it pretty simple for decor. As much as I love buying home decor (especially kitchen stuff), one thing I am severely lacking in are tablecloths! I just don’t seem to have any. So, I substituted with 3 different pieces of fabric; one plain white which I used to cover the table, one pink which I used as a table runner, and a cute and stripy one that I placed in the center. I think all three worked really well together, and I’m so pleased with how they turned out.
I didn’t really have a theme I was trying to stick to. Usually, I at least have a colour scheme, but the fun part about this was just making it bright & pretty! It just so happens that most of my cute serving plates & platters are blue, so I guess that worked out in my favour. Also, how cute is that leaf plate? I can’t get enough of it.
I do love to go all out for decoration, but I decided to keep this relatively simple, so the focus was on the food. I did, however, put a couple of tiny jars of flowers scattered around the table, along with my favourite leafy green plant, which I think was the perfect finishing touch.
I put together a playlist full of songs that are easy listening, happy, and have acoustic ~vibes. I decided to write them down for you incase you want to throw your own spring soirée and weren’t sure where to start! If you have any good song suggestions for me to add to this playlist, I’d love to hear them.
